  1. The CUNY Assessment Tests are critical in measuring your readiness for college success. These high-stakes tests evaluate your competency in areas of reading, writing, and mathematics.
    • Your results on the CUNY Assessment Tests can determine admission to four-year colleges.

    • Your results on the CUNY Assessment Tests can determine whether or not you can enroll in credit-bearing courses directly, or if you must first take non-credit courses in reading, writing, math, or ESL.

CUNY assesses advanced proficiency in reading, writing and quantitative reasoning with the CUNY Proficiency Examination, or CPE. All CUNY students must eventually take and pass the CPE. Although you don’t have to take the test until you have reached your 45th credit, it’s a good idea to plan ahead. »


Special Arrangements for Testing Accommodations based on disabilities will be granted to comply with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Students who wish to request such accommodations should consult their college's Testing Office or Office of Student Services.
