Dear CAOs and CUNY Mathematics Faculty:
I am writing to announce the creation of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Mathematics Instruction. Chancellor Goldstein has established this prestigious award program to recognize faculty who have implemented an outstanding instructional method for teaching undergraduate mathematics at CUNY. These instructional techniques must be shown to positively impact student learning and to have the potential to be used with many students. On behalf of the Chancellor, CUNY’s Central Office of Academic Affairs is administering the award.
Up to six awards will be given each year: two in each of the three campus sectors (community colleges, comprehensive colleges, and senior colleges), with up to one award per sector to a full-time faculty member and one to a part-time faculty member. Each award will be $5,000.
Applications must be submitted by the CAO of the college of the nominated mathematics faculty member. Each candidate's complete application materials (including letters of support from the CAO and the applicant’s department chair), must be submitted via e-mail in a single PDF file by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2009.
Please read the attached application packet for details about this new award program, and please share it widely on your campuses. We are all extremely eager to identify, recognize, and promote excellence in undergraduate mathematics instruction at CUNY colleges.
Thank you in advance for your assistance in launching the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Mathematics Instruction. Please direct any questions to mathinstructionaward@mail.cuny.edu.
Sincerely,
Alexandra W. Logue
Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost
